Sports as the driver of positive change and prevention of violence

Sports provides a platform for learning and developing skills, such as discipline, self-confidence, leadership, and at the same time, the athlete is relying on principles such as tolerance, cooperation, and respect. When emphasizing these positive aspects of the sport, sport can become a huge force to trigger positive social changes in cultures and communities around the world because it has the capacity to transform the lives of individuals. Transformation of an individual’s life can be realized by encouraging physical, psychological, emotional and social well-being and development. At the same time, sport plays an important role in cultures and communities around the world. Only these factors justify investing in the realization of sports activities and programs. Although there is a growing awareness that sports programs deserve support, as they represent a powerful means of achieving broader goals, in particular in the development of peace and peace programs, there is still a lack of support for the implementation of these.

Because sport is a common language that can bridge cultural, ethnic and geographical divisions, many initiatives use sports to promote the reconciliation of communities or nations in conflict. Programs can be done locally, for example creating ethnically mixed teams. Also, these initiatives through the implementation of project activities can act at the national or regional level, promoting the interaction of people from different areas, with an emphasis on rural. Sport also plays a role in international diplomacy, helping to establish communication within civil society that sometimes paves the way for political dialogue. Because of its ability to gather people, stimulate self-confidence and teamwork, and attract public and media attention, sports programs also serve as a useful tool for promoting social or political change. Based on the international human rights framework and the unique attributes of sport, sport represents a significant, but largely unexploited source of potential for advancement and acceleration of development and peace efforts around the world.

  • Global Analytics (GA) and sport activities

Sport is a powerful tool for strengthening social connections and networks and promoting the ideals of peace, tolerance, solidarity, non-violence, and justice. In this regard, Global Analytics continues in the summer period with its activities that include supporting multicultural and international projects that contribute to the expansion of cooperation through socializing and sports. One such project was held, called 46th Traditional karate summer camp “Zaostrog 2017”, organized by karate clubs: University Karate Club “Bosna” from Sarajevo, Karate club “Student” from Mostar, Karate club “Champion” Ilidža, Karate club “Do” Tuzla, Karate club “Empi” Prozor-Rama. Participants of the seminar were athletes from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, as well as guests from the USA, Australia, Denmark, and Germany. Apart from socializing, trainings were led by medal winners from world and European championships.

All activities and trainings were realized under the watchful eye of the most successful coach in BiH and one of the greatest living legends of karate sports in the world, sensei Suad Ćupina, 8th day. Denis Muhović, the coach of the national team of karate, was in charge for the program and realization of the trainings, which insisted on mutual respect, but also on the consistent respect of the Codex of karate sport.

The special value of the realization of these or similar projects is that if you ask any participants why it is important for them to be a part of the project, their answer will surely emphasize the special friendships and bonds, that have been made, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation, socioeconomic status or belonging to a particular culture.

This project, which, unfortunately, was not supported by state or international organizations, has shown that sport can fight against all negative trends that are present today in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in Europe. Children and youngsters learn to respect others and different, to focus energy on a sporting competition, not on violence and extremism of any kind.

The seminar ended with a joint jump in kimonos from the mole at 22.00, which was an attraction for the entire Zaostrog.

Members of the GA team also participated in the camp, where on that occasion was established cooperation and agreed future activities with karate clubs and other sports associations.
